Four Lakes Loop - Iain Macdonald There are only a handful of rangers covering the whole wilderness area, so they are not able to check out all the trails on a regular basis. Along this route you have the opportunity to visit and/or camp at Granite Lake. After last weekend's mellow backcountry excursion, I was hankering for a beating to help me get in shape for the High Sierra Trail in August. Interestingly, the igneous rock here spans the spectrum from granite (with mostly white or pink crystals) to diorite (salt & pepper rock) to gabbro (with entirely black crystals), all of which prompted me to chatter excitedly about plutonic petrology. Perfect weather and great spot to enjoy the stunning Trinity Alps wilderness! Day 3, we hiked from Deer Lake back to the Long Canyon trailhead. This geology closely matches that of Ingalls Peaks in the central Cascades, and as such, the terrain here also looks very similar. The views of the Grey Trinities disappear as the trail climbs over a saddle north of Siligo Peak and descends down to aquamarine Luella Lake.
